name: Adaine Abernant
canon: Dimension 20: Fantasy High
age: 17
canon point: Junior Year, episode 2, as the Bad Kids are on their way back from the Red Wastes after defeating the Night Yorb.
history: Canon wiki link, which covers the events of freshman year. During sophomore year, the Bad Kids spent their spring break going on a wild mission to recover the Nightmare King’s crown, which was stolen during the fight against Kalvaxus at the end of freshman year. Adaine's journey through Sophomore Year specifically involves:
  • Adaine moves into Mordred Manor along with Fig, Kristen, Tracker, Sandra-Lynn, and Jawbone.
  • She summons a frog to be her emotional support familiar, whom she names Bogarial Frogariel, or Boggy the Froggy for short. Sometimes, Boggy is summoned as an owl instead of a frog, in which case he is called Bogowlriel Frogowlriel.
  • Her mother, Arianwen, helped steal the crown and is spearheading the effort to revive the Nightmare King, alongside a mysterious tabaxi named Kalina.
  • Adaine is kidnapped by her father, Angwyn, and other elves, and forcibly brought back to Fallinel, with the hopes that she will stop shirking her (perceived) duties as the Elven Oracle.
  • While in Fallinel, Adaine is reunited with her older sister, Aelwyn, who has been subject to torture which didn’t allow her to sleep for the better part of a year, slowly driving her to lose her mind.
  • When the Bad Kids come to rescue Adaine, she brings Aelwyn with them, and helps to restore her mind. However, Aelwyn tricks them, and escapes to go join their mother.
  • Adaine meets Ayda Aguefort, the immortal half-phoenix daughter of Principal Aguefort. Ayda is also 1) a divination wizard, and 2) neurodivergent, and the two quickly become best friends.
  • Adaine is forced to confront her greatest fear, that as an elf, she will outlive all of her friends. She speaks with a vision of her future self, and the two of them question why their parents never loved them. Adaine comes to the conclusion that her friends do love her, so maybe she isn't completely unlovable.
  • When Adaine comes face to face with her parents and sister in the Nightmare King’s forest, Aelwyn stands up for Adaine, which causes Angwyn to attack her, knocking her out. Adaine retaliates by punching her father to death using a new spell which Ayda wrote just for her.
  • The Bad Kids foil Arianwen’s plan by realizing that the Nightmare King was actually an ancient goddess of mystery and doubt, who Kristen becomes the sole worshiper of and restores to her true self, naming her Cassandra.
  • Cassandra permanently removes Arianwen’s magic, and sends her running off into the forest, being chased by a nightmarish van with human hands instead of wheels.
  • Back home in Mordred Manor, Jawbone surprises Adaine with adoption papers, to become her legal guardian. Within one year of meeting him, Jawbone already shows Adaine more love than her parents ever did in the sixteen years prior.
  • The Bad Kids gather for a pool party at Riz's apartment complex, where Riz's mom Sklonda sees Riz's Memento-style tattoos, one of which reads "Night Yorb" across his chest. In reading it aloud, she summons the actual Night York onto the material plane— a giant manta ray-like monster, which plunges Spyre into eternal night.
  • The Bad Kids spend their summer vacation chasing down and fighting the Night Yorb, sealing it away and returning the sun to Spyre just in time to start their Junior Year.

abilities: Adaine is a wizard, which means that she learns magic via study of written spells. Her specialization is in Divination, which is magic concerning spells of discernment, remote viewing, supernatural knowledge, and foresight. She is a powerful diviner, and often gets visions of future events, which she then acts (alongside her friends) to prevent (if they are catastrophic) or uphold (if they are advantageous). She channels her magic through the use of an Arcane Focus, which in Adaine's case is a magic sword known as the Sword of Sight, which has been passed down through many generations of Elven Oracles. She also needs to have her spellbook on hand in order to cast higher level spells, and can learn new spells by copying them into her spellbook.

personality:
For her entire childhood, Adaine lived in her older sister Aelwyn's shadow. Aelwyn was the golden child, her parents' perfect daughter, who could do no wrong in their eyes. Anything Adaine did or said was minimized, criticized, or even outright ignored. Even once Adaine makes friends at Aguefort, their wild shenanigans often barrel forward despite Adaine's logical protestations. She is by no means quiet, but she still has to struggle to be heard, even among the people who do, or should love her.

The scorn from her parents, and Adaine's desperation to earn their approval, led Adaine to develop an anxiety disorder. Often, after doing something she knew would disappoint her parents, Adaine would fall into a panic attack. Once she opened up to Jawbone O'Shaughnessy about her panic attacks and started taking anti-anxiety medication, she started to be able to live a freer, more authentic life. She learned that her anxiety was not a personal failing, but a mental illness she was not to blame for.

Adaine has always dedicated herself to her studies, fiercely and dutifully. Before high school, she felt a pressure to excel, to prove herself worthy of her parents' approval, but after failing Hudol's entrance exams and enrolling at Aguefort, Adaine began to discover how much she actually enjoyed learning for the sake of learning. She is much more suited to practical spellcasting than the theoretical study that Hudol focuses on, and has even learned enough about wizardry that she wrote a brand new spell for her best friend, Ayda. Whereas some of her friends enjoy raucous parties, it takes Adaine a while to warm up to the idea of letting loose, and she would still prefer to spend her time doing more "indoor kid" activities than she would going out and getting drunk.

When not reacting to her parents' abuse with fear and anxiety, Adaine's response was to become petty and vindictive. Most of the time, she directed her anger towards her sister, slinging offensive spells at Aelwyn under the table when her parents weren't looking. Adaine's fury doesn't show often, but when she does allow herself to be derisive, she is merciless. In freshman year, any time that Biz Glitterdew spoke, she spared not one single thought for his feelings, and made it perfectly clear to him just how much she found his fedora-tipping, "m'lady" behavior to be completely repulsive.

Even though Adaine is petty, she is not without the capacity to forgive those who have wronged her. The first time the Bad Kids met Jawbone, when he was working at the Black Pit, the werewolf bouncer bit Adaine and almost infected her with lycanthropy. However, once Adaine got to know Jawbone, not only did she forgive him, but the two would eventually grow so close that Jawbone filed to adopt Adaine as his daughter after the death and disappearance of her birth parents. Even Aelwyn, her greatest nemesis, earned Adaine's forgiveness, when Adaine finally saw clearly how she, too, had been a subject of their parents' abuse, albeit in a different form. In the end, Adaine and Aelwyn were able to bury the hatchet and grow closer as sisters.

Overall, Adaine has proven herself to be remarkably resilient, able to adapt to and overcome all of the adversities of her upbringing. She needed the help of her friends and newfound family to do so, but with their support and encouragement, Adaine has grown into a powerful wizard, a loyal friend, and a truly happy teen.
