Sophomore Year history

ELMVILLE
  • Sandra-Lynn and Jawbone buy a new (haunted) house, called Mordred Manor, andrd's tower her bedroom.
  • Adaine's ghost friend Zayn Darkshadow starts haunting Adaine's tower.
  • Principal Aguefort arrives and announces that the party's Spring Break project— which will account for 60% of their grade— is to retrieve the crown of the Nightmare King, which was stolen from Aguefort's office at the end of freshman year.
  • Adaine uses the Find Familiar spell to summon an emotional support animal: a very round frog that she names Bogariel Frogariel, aka Boggy the Froggy.
  • Fig and Riz go missing. The rest of the party goes to Riz's office, where they fight a Riz doppelganger. Adaine finds a gun, but the rest of the party discourages her from using it.
  • The party finds out from Sandra-Lynn that Fig has gone to Bastion City, where she seems to have trapped her biological father, Gorthalax, in a gem.
  • They find a strange photo in Riz's office, of his late father, Pok, with his arm around someone that no one can see... Except for Sklonda and Sandra-Lynn. Sklonda explains that the seemingly invisible person in the photo is Kalina, a tabaxi who was Pok's former partner.
BASTION CITY
  • The party shows up at the hotel in Bastion City where Fig seems to be, and Adaine dispels a transmutation effect on the concierge, which reveals that they are a demon. And so are all the other hotel employees. The party fight demons, and Adaine goes into the lower levels of the hotel, where she finds Riz strapped to a table with a possessed Fig about to stab him with a ritualistic knife. She dispels magic on Fig and snaps her out of it.
  • The party regroups to discuss their next steps. Fabian wants to talk to Aelwyn (because he wants to make out with her), but Adaine argues that Aelwyn is not a good person, and that maybe they should find her parents instead.
  • Adaine helps Ragh telepathically tell the rest of the group that he witnessed Kalina speaking to Adaine's mother Arianwen on the night of prom, after the party's big fight against Kalvaxus. Afterwards, Kalina stopped Ragh on his way home, and told him that she would kill his mother if he ever told anyone what he saw.
LEVIATHAN
  • The party follow's Arianwen's trail to the pirate city of Leviathan. They go to speak with Garthy O'Brien, who says that 1) they were supplying Bill Seacaster with the palimpsests that he passed on to KVX Bank in freshman year, and 2) Arianwen had brought the Nightmare King's crown to them in order to break a curse that the crown had placed on her. She tricked Garthy into breaking it without revealing exactly what the curse was, and they kicked her out as soon as it was revealed. They reveal that she left Leviathan on a ship bound for Fallinel.
  • After the party rescues Fabian from a disastrous fight with Captain Whitclaw, in which the illithid pirate captain decimated all of Bill Seacaster's low-level warlocks, they try to get some rest, but Adaine discovers that Ragh has been dominated, and he proceeds to attack the party. Kalina breaks into Riz's room, where she discovers that Ragh had spilled the beans. She disappears, and Ragh (now no longer dominated) gets a call that his mom has died. The party suspects that she's in danger, but not dead yet.
  • Garthy O'Brien sends the party to the Compass Points Library so that Adaine can learn a Sending spell to communicate with people back in Solace. There, the party meets Ayda Aguefort, the half-phoenix daughter of Principal Aguefort, and she and Adaine instantly hit it off.
  • Once Adaine has learned Sending, they speak to Principal Aguefort, who tells them that the version of Ragh's mom who died was a clone, and her real body is safe, hidden underneath the school.
  • The party sees that Captain Whitclaw is making a play to gain control over all of Leviathan, and decide to fight him. However, some elves teleport in from Fallinel, there to kidnap Adaine and bring her back with them. Her father, Angwyn Abernant, is also with them. The fight is not going well, and elves offer Adaine an ultimatum. If she agrees to come with them to Fallinel, they will stop helping Whitclaw, and give her friends a fighting chance. Adaine uses Sending to send a message to Ayda asking her to help her friends, and teleports with the elves to Calethriel Tower.
FALLINEL
  • In Fallinel, Adaine's attempts to escape via magic are dispelled by the other elves. She refuses to cooperate, and is dragged away to a room higher in the tower. On the way, she sees a room with Aelwyn, trapped inside a large orb that is slowly rotating. She's been kept there for almost a year, prevented from resting, and has been driven mad from insomnia. The elves put Adaine into a similar orb.
  • The rest of the party makes their way to Fallinel, where they regroup with Fabian's grandfather, Telemaine Lomenelda, who tells them that the Abernant family has been disgraced within Fallinel, and that Arianwen has been charged with treason (for an unknown crime) and fled. They plan their attack to rescue Adaine from the tower where she is being held.
  • Adaine successfully cases Dispel Magic and breaks free from her rotating orb, however this sets off an alarm. She hides in Aelwyn's room, where Aelwyn sees her but the guards do not. Aelwyn covers for her, and the two sisters message each other telepathically to catch each other up to speed. Adaine can tell that Aelwyn is not doing well, repeating herself without realizing, and she feels for her sister, witnesssing her being put through such torture. Aelwyn, completely broken, cries and apologizes to Adaine for bullying her their whole childhood. Adaine realizes that Aelwyn was abused and manipulated by their parents, just like she was.
  • Adaine is re-captured, but her cell is close enough to Aelwyn's that they can keep in touch via Message spell.
  • The party storms Calethriel Tower to break out Adaine, using Ayda and Principal Aguefort's help. Adaine gets them to rescue Aelwyn as well. Angwyn escapes by going invisible and fleeing. The group retreats to Telemaine's forest.
  • Adaine attempts to restore Aelwyn's mind with a Detect Thoughts spell, finding her mindscape completely destroyed, except for a powerful abjurative charm, that Aelwyn seems to have left, knowing that only Adaine could find it. When Adaine dispels it, Aelwyn's mind is returned to her... but so is her abrasive, abusive personality.
  • After arguing with Adaine about their parents' motives, Aelwyn tricks the group and teleports away.
LEVIATHAN (AGAIN)
  • The party goes back to Leviathan to do more research into Kalina and the Nightmare King. They learn about a mysterious nameless goddess who performed five transubstatiations:
    1. Her spellbook was turned into a coin.
    2. Her familiar was turned into a plague.
    3. Her sanctum was turned into a curse.
    4. Her focus broomstick was turned into a tree.
    5. Her name was turned into something unknown before it could be unmade.
ARBORLY
  • Ayda teleports the party to Arborly, on the edge of the forest of Sylvaire, where they think Arianwen went to try to revive the Nightmare King.
  • Adaine scries on her mom and sees her, Aelwyn, and Killian, a wood elf whom they've hired and ritually murdered, traveling through the forest of Sylvaire. Aelwyn dispels the scrying, but Adaine can sense that Aelwyn didn't notice the Scry spell herself; someone else did and told her to dispel it (likely Kalina). Adaine and Riz case out the inn room where Arianwen ritually murdered Killian and embedded a gem in his chest, and finds out that Arianwen had sent a message to Angwyn, instructing him to join them.
  • During this, Fig gets subpoenaed and brought to hell, along with Riz, Gilear, and the Hangman. Adaine contacts Ayda for help solving the mystery, and also to tell her that Fig et al are in hell. During this exchange, she finds out that Ayda and Fig kissed and are now dating.
  • Gorgug convinces Principal Aguefort to loan the group his stopwatch that stops time so that they have enough time for Adaine to help Ayda learn the spell Planeshift.
HELL
  • The rest of the party Planeshifts into hell and joins Fig and Riz on Bill Seacaster's ship the Goldenrod (made out of the body of Kalvaxus), and they all fight devilish forms of their former enemies as they sail their way to try to rescue Riz's dad.
  • Bill shoots Riz out of a canon and he reunites with Pok, who he learns is an undercover agent from Heaven.
ARBORLY (AGAIN)
  • The group (sans Riz) goes back to Arborly. Pok sends Riz back to Arborly to regroup with them, after stocking him with cool heavenly gear.
  • Ayda gifts Adaine with a custom-written spell: Adaine's Furious Fists. It allows her to deal magical force damage with a melee attack, and knock her targets prone. Adaine also re-summons Boggy as an owl instead of a frog, and dubs him Bogowlriel Frogowlriel.
SYLVAIRE
  • The party makes their way into the forest of Sylvaire, and start looking for the ingredients they need to create a vaccine to hide themselves from Kalina's influence. The party is separated from their hirelings when Kalina attacks, and they retreat back out of the forest.
  • They make six doses of the vaccine, and they upload a video of Kalina to the internet using Gorgug's signal antennae, and it goes viral as people try to figure out why only some people can see the tabaxi in the video.
  • The party goes back into the forest and make their way to an ancient temple dedicated to the nameless goddess. They learn more about the goddess' transubstantiations.
  • Kristen tries to commune with the goddess, and is stabbed through the chest by a skeletal unicorn's horn. When the rest of the party finds her body, it's as though she's been dead for 850 years. Adaine pockets one of Kristen's finger bones.
  • The party is split up and forced to face their greatest fears.
  • Adaine closes her eyes and starts walking, and eventually finds herself at the edge of a cliff. She steps off the cliff and plummets, beginning to drown. She's confronted with a vision of her future self, dressed in mourning clothes. Adaine asks her future self why she doesn't have any friends, but she already knows the answer. Being an elf, she has a longer lifespan than the rest of her friends, and will eventually see them all die. The one thing future Adaine doesn't know is why she was so easily discarded by her parents. The two Adaines wonder whether they are unlovable. Present Adaine tells future Adaine that she knows her friends love her, "so maybe there's hope for us yet." However future Adaine tells present Adaine that in order to progress through the forest, she needs to let go of that hope.
  • Adaine finds herself having been summoned by her mother, trapped in a prison orb like the ones in Calethriel Tower. Her father, Aelwyn, and Killian are also there. Adaine messages Aelwyn telepathically, to ask if she's okay, and Aelwyn tells her to, for once in her life, just please do what their parents ask. Arianwen tries to get Adaine to tell her the Bad Kids' plans so she can stop them. Adaine refuses, and confronts her parents' expectations of loyalty when they have never shown her love.
  • Arianwen leaves, with Killian in tow. Angwyn threatens to "fix" Adaine, and tells Aelwyn to get the information they need from Adaine's mind. Aelwyn protests, but Angwyn threatens to hit her, so she casts Detect Thoughts on Adaine.
  • Inside Adaine's mindscape, Adaine shows Aelwyn how their memories growing up are terrible, but they can make new, better memories, and promises her that she wants to rebuild their relationship as sisters. Aelwyn pulls out of Adaine's mindscape, and confesses to Angwyn that she doesn't have the information he was looking for.
  • Angwyn shoots a magical attack at Adaine, but Aelwyn Counterpells it. Angwyn turns on Aelwin instead. Adaine tries to Counterspell his attack, but he Counterspells her Counterspell, and shoots Aelwyn with a Lightning Bolt, knocking her out.
  • Adaine uses the spell Ayda gave her, Adaine's Furious Fists, to punch her father with an incredible amount of magical force behind it, and kills him in one blow. She rushes to Aelwyn's side and stabilizes her.
  • Adaine regroups with the party, sans Kristen. However, tethered to the finger bone in Adaine's pocket, Kristen— now the sole worshipper of the nameless goddess of mystery and doubt— casts Raise Dead on herself, and comes back to life.
  • The party splits up to rescue their allies, and they all come back together to fight Kalina and Arianwen and stop the ritual to revive the Nightmare King. Aelwyn and Adaine reveal to Arianwen that Angwyn is dead, and Adaine killed him. Arianwen vows that she will make them pay.
  • In the middle of the fight, the same skeletal unicorn that killed Kristen also skewers Adaine through the heart and kills her the same way. Aelwyn pleads with the clerics to save her, and Kristen casts Revivify.
  • Just as the Nightmare King is about to come back into being, Kristen realizes that the Nightmare King and the nameless goddess are one and the same. Kristen pledges herself to the goddess, and gives her the name Cassandra.
  • Cassandra finishes the fight, and permanently removes Arianwen's magic, sending her running off into the forest, being chased by a nightmarish van with human hands instead of wheels. She gets the Bad Kids and their allies safely out of the forest.
BACK HOME IN ELMVILLE
  • When they return home to Solace, Adaine finds that Jawbone has left sixteen presents in her bedroom— to make up for all the shitty birthdays she had before he met her. He presents her with one more gift: adoption papers!
  • Aelwyn moves into Adaine's room in Mordred Manor as she starts the journey to redeem herself.
  • Adaine gifts Ayda with a custom spell, in return for Adaine's Furious Fists. For Ayda, who is learning from conversations with Jawbone that she may be autistic, Adaine writes the spell Ayda's Comprehend Subtext.
  • At the end of the school year, the gang kicks off summer vacation with a pool party at Strongtower Luxury Apartments. When Riz takes his shirt off to swim, Sklonda finally sees all the Memento-like tattoos he got while coked out of his mind in Leviathan. As she says the words "Night Yorb" aloud, there is a shaft of light and Riz starts to hover in midair, as a monstrous being known as the Night Yorb is summoned into existence.
  • Principal Aguefort appears and tasks the gang with their new junior year project: stopping the Night Yorb from plunging the world into endless night!
