Adaine is a high elf, which means she is slightly shorter than average for a human, and her ears are long and pointed. However, in Victory Road, Adaine has been made human. Her ears are rounded like a humans, although they still end in a slight hint of a point. Her height and build has not changed. Instead of trancing for 4 hours every night to rest, she now must sleep for 8 hours like a normal human would.

Adaine is the younger of Angwyn and Arianwen Abernant's two daughters. She was born in the elven nation of Fallinel, but at a young age moved to Solace, when her father became the elven ambassador. For her entire life, Adaine has lived in her older sister Aelwyn's shadow. Aelwyn was the golden child, her parents' perfect daughter, who could do no wrong in their eyes. Anything Adaine did or said was minimized, criticized, or even outright ignored. The scorn from her parents, and Adaine's desperation to earn their approval, let Adaine to develop an anxiety disorder. Often, after doing something Adaine knew would disappoint her parents, she would fall into a panic attack. However, with the help of her friends, her school guidance counselor, Jawbone O'Shaughnessy, and some anti-anxiety medication, Adaine is able to live a freer, more authentic life. Adaine has always dedicated herself to her studies, fiercely and dutifully. Before high school, she felt a pressure to excel, to prove herself worthy of her parent's approval, but after failing Hudol's entrance exams and enrolling at Aguefort, Adaine began to discover how much she actually enjoys learning for the sake of learning. She is much more suited to practical spellcasting than the theoretical study that Hudol focuses on, and has even learned enough about wizardry that she wrote a brand new spell for her best friend, Ayda. Whereas some of her friends enjoy raucous parties, it takes Adaine a while to warm up to the idea of letting loose, and she would still prefer to spend her time doing more "indoor kid" activities than she would going out and getting drunk. Adaine is a powerful diviner, and has inherited the role of the Elven Oracle— a role passed down to her after the death of the previous Oracle— however, if you asked her, she would state that she is not just the Elven Oracle, she is everybody's oracle.
